Objective:

  • Create a building of the National Bank, corresponding to the ambitions of a dynamically developing country and which will become an iconic for the city

Challenge:

Develop a project concept in a very short time.

Hardships:

  • Astana is the second coldest capital in the world, with sudden temperature changes during the day. This dictates its own conditions and makes adjustments to the architectural formation

Solutions:

  • A large enough spot in width for the building, cut into sections suitable for offices, and joined together by atriums that have become common spaces in the center of the building
  • Due to the alternation of transparent and matte parts of the glazing, our team achieved a reduction in the amount of solar energy that would penetrate into the building in the summer, thereby saving on air conditioning
  • Departure from the classical ideas of the formation of internal, demi-season spaces, personal zones

Facts and details:

  • The prototype of the forms of the new building of the National Bank is a mountain landscape characteristic of Almaty, the southern capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan
  • The second associative line of the building form we proposed is the fluctuation graphs of permanent changes in financial indices, graphically similar to mountain landscapes
  • The site is part of a territory that is being actively built up in preparation for the EXPO 2017, the development of which was planned to continue after the EXPO
